10 The Art of the Title

The Inner Workings

When researching in more depths about titles in opening sequences of films i have found that the titles come in all shapes and sizes, they all also relate some how to what the film is going to be about. For example in the opening sequence to hell boy the titles being introduced on the screen we see a lot red being presented, which is a connotation within the thriller theme,

The detail-oriented montage is another example, where the audience is introduced to themes in a film or information about its characters through relevant close-up or overlapping imagery. Thrillers are born from a universal appeal and are often broad in scope: Graphic animation, nostalgic influence, situational type and photo montage.  There are certain narrative, technical, and graphic techniques for which title design is an ideal venue.

I also noticed that the titles for the opening sequence can be very effective just by using a single camera movement. Titles do not have to be genre specific meaning that within the titles there maybe other themes or similar topics emerging just from seeing the titles therefore it does not mean if a title isn't as thriller related as the others it isn't a different theme within the film.

How could i apply this to my coursework?

When looking through the research i have collected it has defiantly helped me with my understanding about how i will apply this research in my coursework. As myself and my group have decided to go down the psychotic thriller theme route i think we could have different distorted images in the background of a character running through the woods with scary like font for the titles and then keep crossing over to just a black background to emphasis to darkness within the opening sequence with the titles slow moving on screen which will then contrast with the fast pace moving in the background, i think there will also be use of shadows within the opening sequence we are creating as in the films we have previously watched e.g. seven, there has been good use of shadows which is also a convention within thrillers. The titles could also be all different shapes and sizes for example the name of the film title could be much bigger than the rest of the titles being shown on screen.
