5&6 Thriller Genre/Sub Genre Reserch

What is a thriller?
A thriller is something that is there to give us intense excitement, suspense, uncertainty and nerve wracking tension.  Thrillers provide thrills and keep the audience cliff-hanging at the 'edge of their seats' as the plot builds towards a climax. The tension usually arises when the main character is placed in a menacing situation or mystery, or an escape or dangerous mission from which escape seems impossible. Life itself is threatened, usually because the principal character is unsuspecting or unknowingly involved in a dangerous or potentially deadly situation. Plots of thrillers involve characters which come into conflict with each other or with outside forces.

Genre,Sub Genres and Hybrids
The term genre means categorize basically. It is a word which means you put different types of films into different categories such as an animation genre could be monster Inc but a thriller could be paranormal activity.

Sub Genre means when you are able to put two genres together. An example of this could be the film Bridget Jones, because this is funny and the main character falls in love the sub genre of this film would be a romantic comedy.

Finally a hybrid is when you are able to put not one, not two but three genres together! An example of this could be the film Avatar. This film consists  of Romance, Sci-Fi and Thriller.

What does it need to achieve?

Thrillers are characterized and defined by the moods they elicit, giving viewers heightened feelings of suspense, excitement, surprise, anticipation and anxiety.

In order for a thriller to be thrilling, you need a good story line. Thrillers want to be thrilled. A common element in thrillers is that the protagonist will fall victim to someone else’s scheme and get stuck in a moment of dread. You could also tell the story from a persons point of view who has the most to lose. . The protagonist gives the story character. Give him baggage and emotional complexity.  Multiple points of view can give you great range in a thriller. They allow you inside the heads of many characters, which can build more dramatic tension and irony. Open your book with an action scene. Don’t put biographical information or exposition in Chapter 1. Introduce the crime—which tells you the stakes—and introduce the hero and villain, and even some obstacles the protagonist may face.

How has thriller films developed historically?

When thrillers first came out they were in black and white, they also weren't as violent as they are nowadays, as now there are many action packed scenes whereas back to when they first started in the 1920s there wasn't any sound and maybe the danger was someone putting a gun to someone's head ("The Lodger" 1926). A few years after there was finally sound and directors started getting more ideas and started including spy's and serial killers. In the 1950s there were more murders and more people being victimized being introduced, there was more suspense and action being involved, also during the 1950s there were a lot more sub genres coming out such as "Touch of evil" 1958. By the 1960s more psychopaths were being introduced and more questions were being asked ( "Wait until it's dark"1967). When researching the 1980s there seemed to be a violent wave of thrillers during this time, more technology were being made therefore better quality thriller films were coming out ( the assassination thriller "Blow Out" 1980 ).

Thrillers are in its glossy, high-concept form that the thriller dominates today. The genre today is the vehicle for filmmakers’ fascination with explosive action sequences, cool new technology and dazzlingly twisty plotting.

What are the conventions of a Thriller?
